Steve Roud Awarded Honorary Degree by The Open University

The Society is delighted by the news that the The Open University has awarded Steve Roud the honorary degree of Doctor of the University in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the study of folk song and vernacular culture.

Steve is best known for his Folk Song Index - an indispendable index of English-language folk songs from around the world.  He has also written a number of acclaimed books on folklore, calendar customs and folk music 

Steve won our Katharine Briggs Prize in 2004 for The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland, has served as the Society's Honorary Librarian and in 2024 he was awarded our Coote Lake Medal, in recognition of his outstanding research and scholarship. 

Congratulations Dr Roud!
