The Folklore Society’s Katharine Briggs Lecture and Book Award 2026 will take place on Tuesday 10 November, 7pm, at The Warburg Institute, Woburn Square, London, WC1H 0AB. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Our lecturer this year is Dr Yinka Olusoga, Lecturer in Education, Course Director of the BA in Education, Culture and Childhood at the University of Sheffield and also Director of the British Academy funded project 'Childhoods and Play: The Iona and Peter Opie Archive'.

Dr Olusoga's lecture is titled 'Carving, Mining, Weaving and Forging of Identities, Connection and Belonging: A personal exploration of children’s folklife and why it matters.'.

The evening will also the feature the announcement of the winner of the Katharine Briggs Award for 2026, awarded to the entry judged to have made the most distinguished contribution to folklore studies over the last year.

The Lecture and Award commemorate the life and work of the distinguished scholar Katharine Mary Briggs (1898-1980), who was president of the Folklore Society between 1969 and 1972.

We will also announce the winners of the President's Prizes for student work on folklore.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception.
