What stories were told about the Fens in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries? In this contentious period, debates raged about the land and its people, variously casting the Fens as barren and thriving, rebellious and browbeaten, superstitious and Godly. In this talk, Tabitha Stanmore will explore the stories spun about this wetland, and consider the impact these tales have had on the Fens today.

Dr Tabitha Stanmore is a historian of English witchcraft and magic. Her book, Cunning Folk: Life in the Era of Practical Magic, won the Katharine Briggs Award in 2024. She is currently working on a new book, entitled The Devil in the Fens: A Story of Sorcery and Resistance, which takes a long view of the ‘Matthew Hopkins’ witch trials in Cambridgeshire.
