The Folklore Society Library

Posted on 27th September 2013

We keep a small reference collection of about 1,000 essential books and our old card catalogue at our Folklore Society (FLS) office at the Warburg Institute. To come and look at these, contact the FLS librarian. FLS Library staff work part-time, Tuesday to Friday 2–5, and a prior appointment is needed.

The rest of the Folklore Society Library is stored at University College London (UCL) Library. For more information about obtaining a UCL Library pass as an FLS member, go to: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Library/soc.shtml and contact us to get the necessary confirmation of FLS membership.

Over 12,000 vols of FLS books and periodicals, including current issues, are held at UCL’s Stores at Wickford. All items must be requested online using this order form http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/storeform.shtml. Requested items are usually delivered the following day to UCL Science library. Some books may be borrowed by FLS members with a current library pass.

Much of our collection is listed in UCL’s online catalogue at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/catalog.shtml but about 4,000 of our older books have not yet been added. We are working on a list of these but, in the meantime, the finding aid for them is our card catalogue at our FLS office at the Warburg Institute.

FLS 'Rare' books, pamphlets and folios

FLS 'Rare' books, pamphlets and folios are held at UCL Special Collections, currently in temporary housing at UCL Special Collections at The National Archives at Kew. These items have not yet been added to UCL’s online catalogue but a list of these FLS items in UCL Special Collections is available.

Our Folklore Society Archives and manuscript collections are also held at UCL Special Collections. They are not yet catalogued or indexed. Contact us for a rough working list of these.

More information can be found on our Library Page.
